Can China innovate?

Recommended Posts

Guest FriendofGreece

The article is about whether China can innovate without dissent. The author is doubtful. Does it take more freedom to innovate, i.e. do the Chinese need a free and democratic government for innovation to see the light?

Or is China simply not able to innovate because the Chinese are too dumb and can only be copycats?

What do you think?

The Chinese have been the most innovative nation throughout human history. Of course they can innovate.

The notion that you can not innovate without dissent can only come from politicized clowns. People who

are out wasting their time protesting this and that are not very likely to invent the technology of tomorrow.

The Chinese are highly rational. They mean business. I have been a few times to Shenzen, and I'm scheduled to be there again in October.

It is an amazing place. Technology firms, design bureaus, manufacturing and trade centers all over the place. And the engineers at our

supplier there are in a class of their own. China IS the real deal.

Interesting comments you made, actually I was surprised. I guess with the population they have, there is no way to say that 1.3 billion people cannot innovate. No matter how much the government regulates, how can it regulate everyone? I agree with you about wasting your time dissenting. Must be people who are in arts with nothing to do.  :D

Since you mentioned Shenzhen, I made a little research. It seems that it used to be the big manufacturing hub of China, being the first economic zone, but that since 2010, it has switched to being an innovation hub. In the six years since, it has made phenomenal advances as you described. Must be exciting to see all that. I actually envy you a bit to be able to visit China so often. Is Shenzhen much polluted?

Another article proclaiming doubts about Chinese innovation without loosening up regulations:

"During his May 30 speech at the National Science and Technology Innovation Conference, Xi set the target for the country to become “one of the most innovative countries” by 2020, a leading innovator by 2030, and a global S&T power by 2049."

In your view, can China meet the Chinese President (Xi)'s targets? 2020 is pretty close.

Due to its high pollution, China is now accelerating on the greening of its industries and it is one of the top priorities if not the top. It is good that China and the EU are cooperating on green projects. I hardly read anything about America striving for greening, maybe because we have too many resources (that we are wasting).

Meanwhile, in Japan, it is amazing the kind of innovations they are making.

These are really amazing inventions in Ancient China. What a miracle that those ancient books have survived. Throughout the tumultuous history of China, scientific knowledge has been destroyed on a big scale under the order of various emperors. Just imagine what else would have been invented.

In my opinion, there is nothing more interesting to follow worldwide nowadays than the Silk Road/Maritime Road. Some progress has been made already, but it is a long-term process. I wonder what will happen to the portion of the Silk Road in the Turkey area, considering the recent events in Turkey.

Very nice article:

Africa is often the forgotten continent. This video is a presentation by the author of "China's second continent: How Chinese migrants are building a new empire in Africa". I have watched a few videos of this type and I find that this one offers a really balanced and eye-opening view of China in Africa. The book should be an interesting read.

Hear what the author said about the comments made by Hillary Clinton when she was in Africa:
