Searching for extraterrestrial life

Recommended Posts

I think that it's generally accepted that "alien" life exists somewhere (or most likely in several places) in the universe. It will most certainly not look like what we have imagined in movies and books.

In a sense we're "aliens" too. We are children of the universe.

And I meant that in a sense we're aliens ourselves. We came from the stars. There's a theory saying that most of the material that we're made of comes out of dying stars, or stars that died in explosions (supernovas). This material travelled (and still travels...) through the universe for millennia and landed on earth, so today there are traces of this material in our bodies.

Not sure if you know a well-known singer from the 1970's, Joni Mitchell. In one of her songs (Woodstock) she sang: "we are stardust". Well, seems that this may be true in a literal way.

What do you mean by aliens?

Little Green men with antenae?

Well, the universe is full of life. If you asume an infinite Universe, contrary to the main branch Big Bang Cosmology as I do, there must be an infinite numbers of alien worlds and civilizations virtually identical to ours. And there are also infinite variations of little Green men with antenae.

In fact, in an infinite universe, everything that can possibly exist within the constrains of the Logos (Governing principle of Nature) does indeed exist at any given time in infinite places in an infinite number of variations. Even a finite universe has room for a finite yet very large number of inhabited worlds.

Either way, the density of inhabited worlds in the universe (aka inhabited world per cubic parsec) is very close to ZERO. Taking the finite life expectancy of living planets into consideration the density spreads not just over spatial but over the combined spatial temporal volume (aka life per parsec to the fourth). So the chances to ever encounter alien life are near ZERO.

Not to mention of course that travelling those vast distances to find those "aliens" would be virtually impossible with our current technology (even if we somehow manage to travel at the speed of light...). On the other hand, alien life may be present even in our own solar system in the form of microorganisms living in one of the planets or their moons. Who knows...

No, I don't know that singer nor that song. The title is nice though.

By "alien" I meant "someone" like us, more or less, not micro-organisms which we cannot even see. Considering the infinite worlds and the state of our technology, it seems we are stuck with ourselves on this planet, at least for the time being unless aliens somehow come to visit us.  :D  Although even if we meet aliens, how are we going to communicate with them?

Yeah, why not? Maybe they can transform and be like us, or be transparent, who knows?  :D

Looking like us?

Remember Tintin on the Moon? Apollo 11 landed on the Moon afterwards. On hindsight, the Tintin cartoons seem just so in advance of their time.

Maybe contacts with aliens a la Star Trek may become reality sooner than we thought.
