So much controversies even on how to eulogize Fidel Castro who passed away yesterday. It is interesting to see the opposite views from various countries.

Our own PM, Justin Trudeau, is being criticised virulently for recognizing the good achievements that Castro did for Cuba.

Fidel has always been an interesting case. I do not doubt for a minute that he truly believed in his revolutionary cause until the day he died, which makes him a rare example of a revolutionary leader who - no matter how wrong he was in many things - he stayed true to his beliefs to the end.

Who knows how things would have evolved for Cuba if the Americans had never blockaded them for all those years. They may had become a more open and democratic society than they are today. It's going to be interesting how things will evolve now that Fidel is gone and there doesn't seem to be a strong leader in Cuba behind him. Will they fall prey again to the American investments? Trump doesn't seem very eager to continue in Obama's footsteps and bridge the gap between the 2 countries.

Raul Castro is pretty old too and he will most likely step down in the next few years. What's going to happen in Cuba next? Who knows...

Yes, maybe the best that could be said about Fidel is that he stayed true to his beliefs. His biographer said that he has always lived humbly and was very respectful. You can see from the house he lived in and the clothes he wore that he lived humbly, compared to other leaders.

Raul has said that he will retire in 2018 and has already chosen his VP to succeed him.

As long as the blockade is over, if Americans do not invest in Cuba, won't other countries be interested? I am not sure but does Trump want to put back the blockade?

Not sure what's going to happen when Trump takes over. He had a lot of support from the Cuban expats in Florida who hate the Castro regime, so he won't be turning his back on them.

I guess it will depend on what the Cuban's will do over the next couple of years. What kind of reforms they'll do, who will be the new president, whether they'll allow open elections in the near future etc.

Fidel had his flaws. No doubt. But when you compare him to the Central American "Democracies" the US has always supported, he comes out as a saint. The Cuban exiles have now an opening to intervene and bring back the good old Batista times. Its gonna get ugly.

Communism has this thing, that it gets rid of the middle class and above that is capitalist and corrupt, cares for the poor and makes everyone egalitarian, at least, in theory. Maybe the sad thing for Cuba is, although being a communist country, it was subject to the US embargo, which prevented it to develop like other communist countries like China and Vietnam.
