Where are you guys from?
Please vote and if you'd like write the name of the city you're from.

My guess is that most of you live in Canada, but I may be wrong. The stats show lots of people from the US, Australia and Greece.

Just noticed your post!
There used to be a huge Greek community in Alexandria since the ancient times. Great Greek poets like Kavafis lived there.

Is the Greek communinty still alive there?

Yes the Karnavalia in Kozani are interesting and a lot of fun.  In my xwpio, at every stavrodromi were make fires, sing old folk songs, dance, have mezedes, drinks etc.  Many many events in the surrounding area to go to.  Ive been to Vatera, Mitilini.  Its very quiet there, or at least where Ive been at the Hotel Eipini.

Tirana is good,

However there is a problem with Albanian and Greek goverments.
Almost 700 thousand Albanian live in Greece as low level jobs.
you cant imagine every corner(peripteros, markets etc.) with full of Greek products, banks and churches, Greek Goverment had builded a new Orthodox Church  at the center of Tirana, it is  very big. 20% of Albanian population is Orthodox, 10 % : Catholics and 70 % Muslim, but i must say, albanian muslims arent like turks, much more modern. If you go south of Albania (Himara-Saranda) you can communicate with Greek language easly, also they have greek life style in the south. Surely Albanian people(cause so close) adore ITALY, i can say almost whole Albanian teens can speak italian fluently, pizzas, risottos, football clubs,fashion... yes let me say little Napoli. I hope Elladas Greeks changes their bad Albanian imagine, please dont anger with me but, Albanian and Greek very similar each other. Only difference is Albania is poorer country than Ellada. We must not forget at 70's Ellada was poor too and with military junta. Turkey and Macedonia are enough we have to good relationships with our neighbours...

Albanians are in a way in the same situation as Skopians. They are financialy tied to Greece and they should be made more aware of this.

In the event that Greece's economy fails these two nations will go down faster than Greece.

Greece has been relatively supportive of Albanians in difficult times as opposed to other neighbouring nations, but Albanians seem to forget this. When Italians were sinking Albanian boats full of immigrants, Greeks would open their borders and offer jobs to Albanians (low paying jobs, sometimes ridiculously low paying - agreed on this).

It's up to us to make sure that the next generation will love their Greek heritage as much as we do.

I've met people of Greek heritage in the States (3rd and 4th generation Greeks) and they feel as Greek as I do. I've also met 1st generation Greeks who wouldn't give a rat's as*s about their Greek heritage.

Ultimately it's the parents' influence that makes all the difference.

But the real question is "Are we loosing the battle?" ie are those who don't give a "rat's as*s" as you put it are becoming more and more, while those who still feel Greek lessen via ie. loss of language, undermining of culture, and even watering down of of heritage?

I agree but thats not the point. The question is if we are being engulfed into other cultures, to the detriment of "greekdom"

Well, feeling Greek is much more than speaking Greek, listening to Greek music, having Greek roots etc.

A while ago we had an English fellow in this forum, Tony (and I really hope he's till reading us!), who discovered late in life that he really feels Greek. He's also running a website which he called "grecofilia", what an ingenious word!

I'm teaching Greek at the local Greek community school once a week and over the years I've met several people, who don't have a Greek background, that came to learn Greek because they're so in love with our culture. To me these people are more worthy to be called Greeks than many "real" Greeks who take their Greek heritage as a given.

Also, because of this website I've made contact with many many people from around the world interested in the Greek culture. Some of them are not of Greek heritage and many of them are. The feeling I get is that during the last few years, possibly because nowadays it's easier to get access to information because of the internet, more and more Greeks of abroad are trying to learn about their ancestors and their heritage. And this is a good thing.

I remeber reading somewhere a couple of years ago about this Greek-American family. The great grand father had come to the US in the early 1900's and like most of the immigrants of that era he changed his name to sound more "american". I can't blame him, we have to remeber that these people came to a society that was apprehensive of immigrants and most people coming from Europe or other places had a hard time fitting in.

Whatever the reason, 100 years later the grand children researched the roots of the family, found out what was the original family name and legaly changed their last name back to the original Greek name!

This is to show that many many Greeks living abroad still feel Greek in heart even if they do not speak the language, or know very little about the culture of today's Greeks.

So if you ask me, I'm hopeful. I believe that the internet has helped, and will continue to help, Greeks from all over the world to find their roots and embrace their heritage.

As for me, I'll try to be here and help as many of them as I can!

What can I say, Greek has been in my blood ever since 15th Jan 1994 (Saturday) the day i Entered Greece.

Hi delphi and welcome to Hellenism.Net. Greek is indeed a difficult language to master, but it's not very hard to learn the basics and be able to communicate.

We have a "Learn Greek" area in our forum here: http://www.hellenism.net/cgi-bin/forums/Blah.pl?b=12 with some helpful resources to help you learn Greek.

Don't despair! Many seem to have no time for their roots or heritage at certain stages in their life, but some do return. As we get older, (that doesn't mean elderly necessarily!) we start to reflect on things that matter - things in life that mould us into the individuals we are today. It just takes some of us longer than others to get there, that's all!!

And to add to that sobering comment, just want to say how much I enjoy this site. Thanks for variety of topics and friendly interchanges. Some of the subjects/comments touch my heart. I may not come from Greece (born in Cyprus) but my roots are firmly entrenched in Greek beginings!!

Hello all. I'm using this post to introduce myself. I'm from North Carolina (Durham) in the US but was originally born in Athens. I'm half-Greek and have recently been rediscovering that side of my heritage. Just found this forum and have enjoyed reading all the posts. De-lurking now.

I never knew my father so I can't tell you with certainty, but my mother's side is Dutch and English.  My husband and I converted to Greek Orthodoxy eight years ago and we've been philhellenes since.

Sure why not. We have plenty of room at our house.

Maybe we should start a "vacation exchange program" in Hellenism.Net. Get people to travel around the world and visit each other. It would be fun!

Canadian winters are VERY cold. It sure is an experience for everyone to live a Canadian winter.

Hey!

I'm new here. I was born and raised in New Jersey, near New York City. There are a considerable amount of Greeks in my area. I'm now at college and majoring in English and classics. I would absolutely love to go to grad school to get an MA in classics, Hellenic studies, or something similar.

Love,
Erica

I am from Turkey and was in Greece as an erasmus student
It was a great experience

Hey mystery, welcome to Hellenism.Net
I guess most people don't want to introduce themselves or say where they're from.

What part of Turkey are you from?

Hi everyone. I am originally from Athens, Greece but moved to New York for studies and stayed here since.

I would like to include my facebook page if you don't mind. If you love Greece and the Greek language you will love this page. Unfortunately lately due to a very hectic schedule I can't keep up as much as I would like to, but at least it's moving slowly.

I hope you will "like it"

You shouldn't give up on your culture.
On the other hand, if you don't get along very well with other Greeks in Sydney then you shouldn't necessarily insist on making friends with them. You can keep your cultural ties to your Greek heritage and still hang out with non-Greeks.

How many years are you in Australia?

trust me i don't insist on making friends just because happen to be greeks...
I only care how someone treat me no matter where from .... my best friend is from china and i won't change her with no one we get along well..

I been in Australia for a very very long time over 15 years.

I hear lots about culture and multicultural in Australia. It's not so bad in Canada or the States. Have a hard time defining Greek culture. When in London Heathrow, there was an add about Greece and a souvlaki photo. I don't think this is Greek anyway.
How do we define Greek culture today?? Is it going to Church in Easter, eating mousaka, dancing I don't know what, or
reading Plato, participating in politics etc. ???
How is this culture different to other Europeans or Middle East people??
Any help will be welcome. Thanks

Church in Easter, eating mousaka, dancing

that is what one might call "pop" culture... but part of our culture never the less

just as much as "popping a shrimp of on the barbie" down under is

excellent question and damn hard to define

but then...how would one define the culture of any country in europe or the middle east?

9one thing is for certain though..... there is a little bit of ancient greece in each and every one of them
